I’m a Bargain Hunter. What started as sport out of necessity in my early days of college has grown into a lifestyle. I will gladly drive across town if the yogurt my kids eat is less expensive there than at the store 2 blocks from our house. The adrenaline rush I experience when finding a mammoth bargain is palpable. One of my best finds was during my first years out of college while working an office job. It was a smart black velvet dress at Eddie Bauer for .99 cents! Yay me!

Although these days aren’t as lean as those in which I would make a box of Mac N Cheese last 3 days, the penny pinching thrill is still with me. In these hard economic times, being a bargain hunter has proven worth its weight in gold. This is also why I have a deep understanding of those doing the same. We all want the best deal. We all want to save. No one likes to pay more than it’s worth. In fact, many of us want it for even less. So, to the gal in front of me at the market with 20 coupons, good for you!!!

Yet, there’s another side to this story that I also deeply understand. The side of the person(s) or entity selling the goods. It is indeed a daily balance of pricing merchandise appropriately to keep bread on the table, while offering a fair value that will keep customers happy and returning. In the world of handmade, where I live, this is even more of a delicate balance. In the world of handmade, unlike the mass produced world of widgets and gidgets, the more I make, the more time and money it costs me. As they say in the world of big business, I don’t benefit from economies of scale. So, if I’m to offer a discount on larger purchases, I simply lose money; sometimes a lot of money.

It took me a good while to learn that unlike WalMart or Kinko’s or my grocer where things are cheaper by the dozen, the more things I make as an artist, the more it costs me in time and supplies. Simply put, whether I make 2 totes or 20, it costs me the same per tote and a LOT more time. My time and supplies do not get cheaper simply because I use more of them. My prices are already based on what I need to cover costs, supplies (which I already buy in bulk), labor and still turn a nominal profit. Therefore, offering discounts similar to what you would find in the world of widgets and gidgets is actually not feasible at all.

When I first realized this in my own little business, it was a hard pill to swallow. You see, not only do I love bargains, I love offering them. But, over time, I was kickin’ the bucket financially speaking. I had to draw the line and make it a policy not to offer discounts just because someone asked. And, I’ve had to learn to not take the buyers objection personally.

I’ve discussed this with a LOT of artisans across all specialty lines. Some don’t mind being asked for a price break, while others consider it a deep insult to be asked. I’m somewhere in the middle. While I don’t mind being asked, (remember, I’m a Bargain Hunter) I do fully understand how an artisan would be offended by the question. Buying from an artist isn’t shopping at a garage sale, or a swap meet. Rather, these are women and men who work countless hours to perfect their craft and often do so for faaaar less money than they or their wares are worth.

Think of it this way, if my favorite store or artist were having a sale, you bet I’m going to be there. BUT, I would NEVER ask them outright to sell me something for less than it is being offered. Ever.

It was orignially from a piece of vintage holiday wrapping paper. I "cut" her out digitally, cleaned her up a bit and Voila, a lovely holiday card! I think she's French, so "Joyeux Noel." A New Season...

Back in June as the Summer began, I had lots of "big ideas" for The Craft Pantry over the Summer. Though I wasn't ready to hear it at first, God had other plans. As I worked on these new designs, ideas and projects, things were imbalanced and not coming together at all. One struggle after another. This was in stark contrast to the easy, breezy, busyness I had been enjoying in months prior. All of a sudden, routine tasks were hard, frustrating, stressful and everything that could break did. Even so, I kept pushing forward determined to make the Summer months exciting for The Craft Pantry. No, such luck. At the end of June, my Hard Drive crashed...toasted, done, no go, inoperable, finished. Now, I knew I couldn't run a shop without my computer, design files, etc. Finally, (I'm the kind of gal who needs to be hit over the head on occasion to get the point), I listened to His plan.

I closed shop in July out of necessity, then I closed shop in August out of desire. While The Craft Pantry has been dormant for 2 months, I was given the gift of an amazing Summer immersed in the life's of my two small children and husband. Priceless!

Now, refreshed, re-prioritized and re-balanced, it's time to open The Craft Pantry again. Amazing how easily things fall into place when it's His will. So, next week, before Sept 12, The Craft Pantry doors will open and I welcome you all inside! I'm excited about the new season!

Extended Closure Notice

The Craft Pantry will be closed for the month of August. I wish I could say it is for an extended vacation in the Bahamas, on my own personal yacht, but, I dream. In July my hard drive crashed and MANY graphics files went POOF! We're talking HUNDREDS of files. Thankfully, I had most of them backed up. Of those that were not backed up, I've been able to recover all of them. However, many of those recovered need editing/repair, especially those that included specialty fonts. Sooo, I can't open shop until I restore the graphics I use for product creation and know for certain if there are any I can no longer use. Thank You for your patience!

International Shipping Suspended

Do to recent difficulty with International shipping, The Craft Pantry is not going to be taking International orders at this time. The main reason, packages shipped via First Class International (the least expensive option) DO NOT have tracking and are not covered by the PayPal Seller Protection. Here are a few other reasons:

1) As stated, there is no Tracking or Delivery Confirmation for USPS First Class International packages, thus, if they get lost, both the buyer and me are out of luck.
2) Almost all of the International orders I receive are NOT insured by PayPal when shipped
3) The International packages I send often get opened by Customs and searched. Of late, many of these packages are getting "stuck" in customs. Many of them are not re-sealed properly, thus merchandise is either taken or falls out. I end up replacing a lot of orders for this reason and I lose money every time.
4) Unlike First Class Domestic packages, which I can drop in a drop box or have my Postman pick up, I have to hand deliver First Class International packages to a Post Office, (in my case 15 minutes away).

Keep Calm and Carry On

The now infamous saying, (see more about it's history here: http://www.keepcalmandcarryon.com/pages/history) has now joined The Craft Pantry. I created my image from scratch, using a Rubber Stamp of the World War II British Government's Ministry of Information slogan. After I stamped the image, I scanned it and placed it atop a colored background with border. The image is not the crisp clear text you are used to seeing, rather it is a rougher looking rubber stamped image. Available now in the Classic tote in an array of colors. Cards to follow. Enjoy!

On the Mend

Wow! What a week. Last week the kids started spiking fevers and on Mother's Day I woke up sick too. It was the Flu. Not the fancy Swine Flu, just the good ol' fashioned variety. By Tuesday, I had developed Bronchitis. The good news is, the kids have rebounded quickly. This morning I woke up without a fever for the first time in days. Now, if I can just wake up with all of my energy back.

May began with big plans for lots of new designs and products. Clearly that has been pushed back. I do have some new designs ready to go and I hope to have them rolled out next week. Still aiming for some sales promotions end of month or June.

Stay tuned, we'll break into Spring and Summer soon enough. A little taste below.

Due to extenuating circumstances, delays in product arrival, over-shot deadlines, family illness, an overloaded calendar and a bit o' fatigue... I've just extended my "vacation." Wish it were because I was having a blast in Sunnyville and decided to prolong the fun. But, alas, I have much to do and will simply need more time to do it. So, here is a revised Feb Schedule.

It may seem a bit early to be wishing all a Happy New Year, but I'm ready! Thrilled to report that I'm opening shop earlier than expected. I was blessed with a very successful surgery on December 11 and my recovery has been fantastic! I thank all of you for your prayers and well wishes!! So, as of this morning, December 26, The Craft Pantry has opened it's doors and The Supply Pantry is soon to follow! Look for new designs and supplies in the immediate future!

Also of note, We've been experiencing obscene amounts of snow in Seattle, something that is not all that common. In our yard alone we have over a foot and the photos to prove it. Rain is on the way, thank goodness!

It's Been a While

Greetings from a very chilly Seattle. Woke up to 15 degrees and we're in for a big storm tonight and tomorrow. A good time to catch up on details undone.

It's been near a month since I last blogged and frankly I can't tell you where the time went. November was my biggest month ever in the shop and kept me humming into the wee hours of the morning for weeks on end. I closed the shop on December 7 and alas, on December 9, every package was mailed. Already looking forward to the new year and new designs!

Last April I was diagnosed with PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) and on December 11, I went in for surgery to remove three ovarian cysts that had been causing me great pain for over a year. The past months especially proved challenging, no matter the pain, life keeps on keepin' on. The surgery was a great success and recovery has been a breeze. Resting comfortably, relaxing and enjoying the season has proven the best remedy. The best part, looking forward to no more pain.

As Christmas approaches quickly, I've slowed considerably to reflect on the many blessings we have. The freedom to celebrate the hope given in Christ's birth. The health and vitality of my children. A warm home in a great storm. An amazing husband whose support and enduring love are beyond measure and certainly more than I could ever describe in words. A phenomenal extended family, though near and far, so dear and loved and always in my heart. The precious memories of my grandfather who we lost 2 short years ago, I still feel his love.

Here's to each of you, may your blessings abound, your burdens be light and your HOPE be alive through the season and in the New Year.

International Orders in The Supply Pantry

Sigh. I've just finished a pretty extensive financial analysis on my shop The Supply Pantry. (I know, I'm a nerd). There is some good news and some bad news. The good news, sales are great. The bad news, I am breaking even or losing money on nearly all International Purchases. (Another sigh) So, after a lot of thought, I've decided to suspend International purchases, at least for the short term. This was no easy decision because I love my International Customers!!! But, understandably, I can't give away my products. Here's a detailed explanation:

1) International packages have to be taken to the Post Office for two reasons
a) Most of my International packages are over 13 ounces and ALL packages over 13 ounces have to be taken to the Post Office, they cannot be put in a drop box or they are returned to me. The only exception is a Priority Click N Ship label which is VERY expensive for International Orders.
b) The Postman will not pick up International Packages

2) There is no Tracking or Delivery Confirmation for USPS First Class International packages

3) Almost all of the International orders I receive are NOT insured by PayPal when shipped

4) The International packages I send often get opened by Customs and searched, many of them are not re-sealed properly, thus merchandise is either taken or falls out. I end up replacing a lot of orders for this reason and I lose money every time.

After calculating the cost in time and fuel for each of these trips, (something I've never charged for), I'm losing money on every International purchase.

6) If I were to charge a handling fee or raise the prices of my products in The Supply Pantry to cover the cost of my time and fuel required for International Orders, the prices would be too high for my customers to justify.

Long-winded I know, but I really value all of my customers and wanted to offer the factual reasoning behind this decision, it was not reached lightly.

Happy Halloween! Seattle has lived up to its Halloween tradition once again, dumping rain upon us at an even clip. I can't complain, we've had a very dry and sunny Fall.

Here in The Cole House we are celebrating quietly with a chorus-like sniffle, sniffle, cough, sniffle, sniffle, sneeze. Yep, all four of us sick. Should just put it on the calendar as we are always sick on Halloween. When I was a little girl, I was alway sick on Valentine's Day. Go figure.

Anyhoo, not to worry, Mama and Papa are working to get us all well and in working order.

Sigh. Our baby girl is turning 5. Mmm hmm...5. We're having a celebration, with all the bells and whistles. Fit for a Princess. She's an angel, my girl. She has a huge heart, a bigger smile and loves, loves, loves. She's brilliant, independent and full of the best kind of life. I'm so proud of her. Yet I admit sheepishly, I miss the baby she was. The darling, tiny sweet smelling butter bean I delivered into this world 5 years ago. The baby that needs me every moment. Seems like last week. Really. But, not to wallow. I don't want to miss a moment, not a single blink. So, I embrace the memories gently and hold tight to the present. I'll hang on her every word, every breath, every smile. I love you Sophie.

Autumn is in full swing and I LOVE this time of year. We've been experiencing 70+ degree temps this weekend in Seattle. What better time to hit the local farms and experience the harvest! I've never seen these before, I call them Star Guords for obvious reasons. They are little beauties. What a perfect image. The vibrant colors must have made me crazy because I came home and made apple crisp...who does that!?

Love September in Seattle. I swear it's the nicest "Summer" month we have. Near 80 today and more of the same this week. The kids can't quite figure out why we're not still jumping in the pool. Even so, when night falls, I can feel Autumn in the air, a welcome companion. Been working a lot on new designs for the seasons, those present and soon to come. I think The Pantry is near over flowing with tags, on a crazy tag kick of late. I've been creating far more than I've been listing in the shop. Here's a small sampling, more to come.

I love this time of year, my favorite. We've been gifted with sunshine and sunny days of late and it looks to be more of the same for the immediate future. Back to school, the smell of Fall, the chill in the air, cooler evenings and the switch from iced lattes to warm Pumpkin Spice. I've been bitten with the Autumn bug in my creations too. A few card collections and totes to celebrate the season.

Where Did Summer Go?

WOW! School starts in, (GULP), 5 days! AAH! How did this happen, how could it be, Summer disappeared before our very eyes. Alas, it was a good one, a busy one and a creative one! I managed to open a second shop, The Supply Pantry. It seems to be moving along at just the right pace. I love gathering new and unique treasures to offer to the masses for use in their own artwork. Summer Solstice

Happy first day of Summer! It's not often that we begin Summer in Seattle with sunshine. But, this year, a welcome exception. Sunny, about 70 degrees and beautiful. What better way to start the season! I'm already, yes already, working on new designs and creations for the re-opening of The Craft Pantry in early Fall. I'm just giddy about the opportunity to devote more time to design and creation. Summer Vacation

Wow, not sure when this happened, but it's June! The kids are finishing up school, the weather is still rainy here in Seattle and I'm restless. Yep, all signs that Summer 2008 is just around the corner.

After MUCH consideration, and a fair amount of prayer, I've decided to "take the Summer off." Now, all you mama's out there know first hand it is virtually impossible to take a vacation. So, to clarify, I'm "closing" The Craft Pantry for a spell and devoting some much needed time to family, creating, and yes, even little ole me.

I LOVE what I do as an artist, frankly, I can never get away from it, it is a huge part of who I am. Owning my own business has proven successful, fun and a highly educational. Yet, sometimes, ya need to walk away for a bit and re-approach with fresh eyes. And so I will.

Though I will close The Craft Pantry on June 20, I will leave the door ajar so that you may check my blog and website for updates, news and the occasional creation.

I wish you all a blessed and dream-filled Summer!

I've reached a big milestone in my shop...500 sales! A very exciting accomplishment. Though The Craft Pantry has existed for a couple years, I only opened my Etsy Shop in September of 2007. I never anticipated I would do this well. I want to extend a huge, no, HUGE "Thanks A Million" to all of my customers, family and friends! WHOA! Time is getting away from me. I don't blog much as it is, but not one post during the entire month of April! Sheesh. At least I have some amazing new designs to explain my preoccupation. Fresh off the presses, and out of the fabric closet, are some fantastic new totes just listed in The Craft Pantry. I'm excited about them too, not only because the designs make me happy, but I think they would make an ideal Teacher or Graduate gift. Or, one for yourself for sporting around town this Spring-soon-to-be-Summer! Speaking of Spring, I hear the birds outside my open window and it is SUNNY! It snowed today. Yep...the first day of Spring was exactly one week ago and here we are in the midst of freezing temperatures. Though I looong for warmer weather and a bit more sunshine, there is an up side to these cold gloomy days. CREATING! I've been busy sewing, designing and taking advantage of these indoor days before Spring finally arrives and calls the family outside.

New Beginnings

I love this time of year. As Winter's grip weakens, Spring emerges slowly. She brings change, invigorating a sleepy soul. Each budding flower and tree a reminder it's a time of new beginnings. With Easter just a few short weeks away, there is sure to be traditional celebration... the egg hunts, jelly beans and children's laughter. Yet, I'm most satisfied by the reminder that Christ's Ressurection is the epitome of a fresh start...hope... HOPE! .... not enough of that going around these days. Take it in. Breathe it. We can start from scratch each and every day.

Bring on Spring!

I've not been this excited in months...well, days maybe...nope, I was pretty jazzed about my Sugar-Free Cinnamon Dolce Latte a few hours back. Alas, I digress. From what does my joy Spring eternal? ...oops, that was it. SPRING! I can feel it. Yep. In the midst of still freezing mornings and chilly nights, I can smell it coming up the calendar. SPRING!

And they all said: B R I N G I T O N!!!

No better way to celebrate than to brighten up The Craft Pantry with some amazing designs. Cards, totes, magnets and more...all in the works through these never ending Winter months. I can't contain it any longer and they are now in the shop! Cherry Blossoms, Magnolias, Dogwoods, oh my!

What's more, some amazing photos sure to bring hours of creation as I transform them into little treasures for the masses.
